The Alberta Railway Museum, Sept. 1, 2008. Steam locomotive 1392 undergoes a flue cleaning. A cupful of sand is thrown in the firebox while the locomotive is run at high speed. The draft caused by acceleration pulls the sand through the flues, cleaning out carbon deposits, and producing the plume of black smoke from the stack.
