John Perkins discusses economic hitman activity in the overthrow of the Guatemalan government of Jacobo Arbenz Guzman (1951 to 1954) in 1954. Arbenz promised in his election campaign to return the land of Guatemala, which was owned mostly by the US corporation "United Fruit," back to the people. United Fruit, not liking this, hired a public relations firm in the United States to launch a huge publicity campaign against Arbenz to convince everyone that Arbenz was a Soviet puppet. They convinced the people, the Congress and the President that Arbenz would provide the Soviets a foothold in the western hemisphere. As a result, the President sent in the CIA, the jackals, and the military to "take Arbenz out," which is what happened. And guess what? His successor undid everything Arbenz had done, and turned the land back over to the corporations and United Fruit. Read John Perkins' book, "Confessions of an Economic Hitman."
